Graphite Heat Exchangers

GRAPHILOR® Shell And Tube Graphite Heat Exchanger : POLYTUBE® The "Rugged" Shell and Tube Exchanger

Until now graphite shell and tube heat exchangers were considered "fragile" by most users of impervious graphite heat transfer equipment, who experienced high maintenance costs, premature equipment failure, and overall unreliability. Some common problems associated with this reputation included:

+ Tube breakage resulting from:

  • Transportation induced mechanical shock
  • Thermal shock
  • Water hammer
  • High fluid velocity induced vibration
  • Degradation of impregnant from either corrosive attack or aging

+ Premature failure of tube sheets and headers resulting from:

  • Non-uniform mechanical properties of graphite
  • Poor graphite quality
  • Degradation of graphite impregnant
  • Abrasion and erosion

Now, Carbone's advanced GRAPHILOR® materials opens the door for the new generation of impervious graphite Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers.

+ High Strength GRAPHILOR® Tubes

High Strength GRAPHILOR® Tubes are 20 - 50% stronger than competitors' standard tubes, thanks to new tube manufacturing, graphitization, and impregnation technology developed by Carbone. The exceptional strength of GRAPHILOR® tubes is due mainly to the texture itself, which consists of a fine grain structure and very low porosity, before impregnation. After impregnation every GRAPHILOR® tube is tested, with air under water, at 290 psig. (The actual strength has been measured at over 1000 psig). In addition, both the tensile strength and Young's Modulus of GRAPHILOR® tubes, when compared to competitors' tubes, attest to their superior mechanical properties.

+ What does all this mean?

  • 14 Ft. long, single piece (no joints) tubes, at no cost penalty
  • 30 Ft. long, jointed tubes
  • Greater resistance to vibration related breakage generated by either transport or high fluid velocities
  • Greater resistance to breakage caused by thermal shock
  • Lowest possible absorption rate of process fluids
  • Higher maximum use temperature
  • No degradation of mechanical properties, over time, at maximum use temperature
  • Improved corrosion resistance

+ GRAPHILOR®

GRAPHILOR® BS, graphite impregnated with Phenolic resin, is the result of several years of research and development by Carbone. GRAPHILOR® BS is distinguished from preceding and competitive materials by (1) the quality of graphite used and (2) the improved stability of the impregnant. The resulting benefits are significant:

  • Exceptional imperviousness (Diffusion coefficient in range of 10-7 cm2/S)
  • Ability to withstand temperatures up to 185 C and higher in special cases
  • High degree of stability with respect to mechanical properties and degree of imperviousness (mechanical properties and imperviousness will not degrade over time at maximum use temperature)
  • Excellent resistance to thermal shock
  • Improved corrosion resistance (Compare GRAPHILOR® with competition)
